COVID-19 Vaccine Passports

A digital verification platform for COVID vaccination and test records. Restaurants and sporting arenas used this technology to ensure their customers had a safe experience as America re-opened in 2021.
My Role
- Strategic planner of the roadmap Worked with leadership to gain ongoing investment in the roadmap and strategic direction of the Real Time Health Identity vertical.
- Customer discovery Lead Evaluated business viability and usability risks through customer discovery to create a great experience for the end user that the customer could sell confidently to their buyer.
- Solution Champion Created launch materials including blog posts and market analysis. Demonstrated product capabilities roadmap investments to prospects to help land deals.
Execution
When COVID vaccines started to roll out in 2020, businesses were itching to get customers back in their stores/restaurants/planes/arenas. Unfortunately, not all Americans were on board with vaccinating against COVID. This lead to doubt on whether your fellow relative/coworker/passenger/fan was actually vaccinated.
Complicating this further were new requirments on COVID vaccination status to gain access to events or social spaces. And what evidence did we have to prove our COVID vaccination status? A piece of paper... so easily forged a whole wild market emerged to make a quick buck on enabling vaccine-shy Americans to freely re-enter society without ever recieving the jab.
And so the COVID vaccine passport opportunity was born. Human API was uniquely positioned to verify whether consumers had actually recieved the COVID vaccine (or even COVID tests) with digital medical records. And because we were positioned so well, we heard from hundreds of companies interested in entering the newest hottest business opportunity of 2021.
To capitalize on this emerging market, we created new user flows and new integrations to ensure that pateints would be able to easily find and connect with their COVID vaccine provider. We delivered patient COVID data to our customers with extreme care for privacy and security. And all the while, I kept my eye on the market and advised (internally and externally) on the continuing viability of the COVID market as each new wave came and passed.
Challenges & Achievements
Challenges
- Extracting reliable COVID test data from medical records Medical record data is messy. Ensuring that only COVID data was extracted and delivered to the client was paramout to ensuring the viability of the product especially in the light of HIPPA and data privacy.
- The tempermental nature of the COVID vertical As the waves of COVID came and went so did the market interest in verifying consumer COVID immunity. We tracked CDC data closely to ensure our product offering was effective and timely.
- Everyone wants a piece of the COVID pie ... but most market entrants had never dealt with medical data before. Part of the challenge was educating the market on what technology powers the opportunity at hand.
Achievements
- Helped America repoen safely during ongoing COVID waves Remember how easily COVID vaccine cards were forged? Our technology ensured consumers were really truly vaccinated.
- Connected thousands patients to their COVID vaccine records Did you get your vaccine at your doctor's office? No? Nobody did. And we did the legwork to make it possible for you to find your records even if you got the shot in a parking lot.
- Made the product do the heavy lifting We took a generalized product solution (get your medical records!) to a personalized, verticalized OOTB usecase (get your COVID vaccine records!) that our support team could spin up in minutes.
- Ensured the safety of employees our own company offsite Human API hosted an offsite in Yosemite in December of 2021 right before the Omicron wave. We used our own Vaccine Passport solution to ensure everyone attending was vaccined or tested negative. Zero people contracted COVID at the offsite.
